Words Given and Received

The Lord GOD has given me
a well-trained tongue,
That I might know how to speak to the weary
a word that will rouse them.
- Isaiah 50:4

Reading the verse above caused me to reflect on the word "given" and
the fact God has gifted me. This led me to ask, "What kind of a
recipient am I?"

The question is a valid one. There have been gifts I've returned
because of the size or the color. Other gifts, yes, I have passed on
to others, and still other gifts I have tucked away not to be seen,
worn or used.

OK, if that is how I accept gifts from others, I need to ask myself,
"How do I use the gifts God has given me? A gift like a well-trained
tongue. Do my words inspire the weary? Do they give them hope? Offer
encouragement?" The question I really need to ask is, "Are my words a

Gracious God, may the gifts I have received from you be given to
others with humility in the spirit of love and compassion.
