BEREAVEMENT AND GRIEF COUNSELING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM      

Purpose

To equip and empower men and women to go out into the community to help in the areas of grief and bereavement from a Christian worldview perspective. This program trains students to be able to assist people through their journey of loss utilizing the skills and training in addition to the compassion and empathy they have for those that are grieving.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Bereavement Certification Program is designed to prepare students to work with those who have experienced grief and loss. This program will introduce students to the history and concepts of bereavement and grief while preparing them to work with a variety of people in both individual and group settings. In addition, this program will provide students with community resources to assist in healthy healing for the bereaved. While in the program, students will learn important relationship and communication skills to come alongside those who are experiencing loss. An important part of this program will be a supervised clinical experience in which the students will practice helping skills and grow in professional development. This is a four semester program as outlined below.

Upon completion of this certificate the student will be able to:

  • Equip students with the skills necessary to address the issues of grief and educate the students in the steps to assist a grieving person in the journey of bereavement.

  • Educate students in the helping relationship of assisting grieving people.

  • Instruct students in the resources needed for grieving people.

  • Introduce students to the psychoeducational component of grief and bereavement.

  • Educate students in the development and facilitation of grief groups within the community.

  • Allow students to hone their skills through a clinical internship under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor.
