Lay Counseling Certification

Purpose

This certificate program provides an understanding of the human mind and behaviors. The program will help provide students with an understanding, from a Christian perspective, of key concepts of counseling that can be used as a foundation for further study and pursuit of a career in human services requiring knowledge of behavior. The certificate will also help to provide an ability to prepare for personal, social, and organizational issues of today.  Requires 12 credit hours.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This program leads to certification only and is not a degree.  (Completion of the following four Lay Counseling classes – 12 semester hours)  However, you will obtain college credit with the successful completion of these courses.  That credit could later or simultaneously be used toward an Associate’s or Bachelor’s level degree.

Kingdom College is now partnering with Living Waters Counseling to offer comprehensive training for those interested in becoming lay counselors.

The following courses are available through Kingdom College at an affordable cost of $625 per class.  If you are interested in taking all four courses, you can receive additional savings by paying $1175 by the first payment deadline of your first semester, and the 4th course will be free.

Upon completion of this certificate the student will be able to:

  • Introduce basic listening skills to those desiring to work with people and facilitate the helping process, as well as review traditional and contemporary treatment model
  • Facilitate for appropriate referrals to professional counselors through appropriate assessment skills
  • Develop attending skills, questioning skills, and development of appropriate plans to facilitate forward progress in life skills
  • Have exposure to the ethics and legalities of lay counseling in the community setting
  • Analyze the processes involved with developing a lay counseling practice in a community setting

LCS 101— Lay Counseling I (3 credit hours)

Introduction to lay counseling.

LCS 111— Lay Counseling II (3 credit hours)

To instruct and expose students in the ethics and legalities of professional counseling

LCS 121— Lay Counseling III (3 credit hours)

This experiential and didactic course provides students an understanding of effective interventions from various perspectives and allows them to examine personal characteristics and their effect on individual, couple, and family counseling. This course addresses the need for students to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to integrate and apply an understanding of the theories and techniques to one’s personal and professional life. Accordingly, this course exposes the student to clinical issues related to the delivery of effective counseling. Uses of online resources and situational role play will help the student learn the essential skills involved in building an effective helping relationship.

LCS 131— Lay Counseling IV (3 credit hours)

This course allows students to understand psychological first aid and assessment of those experiencing grief, crisis and trauma.  Although an emphasis is placed on crisis and trauma counseling, students will also explore mental illness.  This course provides students an understanding of the assessment and referral process. Resource development is a key component of this course. This course also provides practical experience for the lay counselor.
